Webartificial intelligence (AI) with ToM-like abilities. Virtual and physical AI agents would be better and safer if they could impute unobservable mental states to others. The safety of self-driving cars, for example, would greatly increase if they could anticipate the intentions of pedestrians and human drivers. WebCan they be artificial moral agents (AMAs), capable of telling the difference between good and evil? In this essay, I explore both questions—i.e., whether and to what extent artificial entities can have a moral status (“the machine question”) and moral agency (“the AMA question”)—in light of Kazuo Ishiguro’s 2024 novel Klara and the Sun .
